Reflection
Open-plan offices promise collaboration but often erode the small pockets of peaceful focus introverts rely on. Naming and gently enforcing quiet boundaries reduces surprise and softens friction; it helps colleagues understand when you are available and when you are not.
Practical cues are low effort and high signal: headphones, a small desk flag, calendar blocks labelled "focus", or a steady soft light can communicate without confrontation. Prepare a brief, kind script for interruptions ("I’m in focus time until 11:30; can we touch base after?") and use it consistently so people learn the new norm.
Keep boundaries sustainable by starting small and checking in with teammates and managers—clarity is kinder than silence. Allow short breaks to recalibrate attention, adjust cues if they aren’t noticed, and celebrate small wins when the office rhythm becomes more considerate.
